11 Best Badass Ladies In Game of Thrones Who Perfectly Define AWESOMENESS!
2019 is indeed a long wait! With Season 7 of Game of Thrones already over, since almost a year back, we have got multiple unmatchable characters. Sketched with perfection, George R.R Martin has impeccably drawn out some of the best and badass ladies in Game of Thrones amidst a chaotic backdrop of wars, betrayals, competitions and deaths.
From devoted wives to ruthless strategists, the epic series includes almost every kind. Each standing for their symbolism, the character sketch of these ladies in Game of Thrones is no less than perfection. So, amidst the pandemonium, who are these and what do they exactly represent? Let’s check out!
1. Cersei Lannister
The ultimate Queen Regent of the Iron Throne, Cersei Lannister, has been throughout the series, one of the most ruthless and most hated characters. A Baratheon by marriage, Cersei literally burns “cities to the ground” for the love of her children. Of course, most of her merciless acts were driven by the witch’s prophecy as shown in Season 5.
“The king will have 20 children and you will have three. Gold will be their crowns, gold their shrouds.”
One of the most important features of Cersei, that rather makes her in the list of strongest ladies in Game of Thrones, is her “I don’t give a damn” attitude. From getting involved in incest with her twin brother Jaime Lannister to torturing Ellaria Sand in the cell, Cersei literally doesn’t care what the world thinks about her. She does what she feels like and on her own terms.
Cersei Lannister belongs to House Lannister, whose motto is “Hear me roar.” And indeed with a series of cruel and ruthless decisions, she makes herself a lioness. The Lannister sigil has a gold lion roaring on the backdrop of a crimson field which too, resembles Cersei’s character.
Like gold, the Queen Regent too, represents love for power, arrogance and love to be feared. While the crimson field represents her cruel and unsparing nature as blood. And finally, when she ascends the Iron Throne, Cersei also represents ego that refuses to bow down even if it’s meant for survival.
2. Daenerys Targaryen
Determination. Leadership. Kindness. Ambition. Valour. Daenerys Targaryen is the one word for all these adjectives. Starring Emilia Clarke, Dany in spite of being young, has won conquests almost more than any other character.
Aiming to get what’s hers by right and birth, she makes herself respected and known, not just among her counsellors but also among the masses. In fact, her influence and success stories had been so popular that even in the far Westeros, the Queen Regent, Cersei Lannister is challenged by her existence.
Like her family sigil, representing three-headed dragon in the background of a black background, Dany represents vitality, passion and mystery. Like her dragons, her presence is intimidating and powerful. And when required, she can also turn ruthless as she does with the Tarlys. A perfect blend of “fire and blood” just in right proportions, Daenerys is surely one awesome lady!
3. Margaery Tyrell
Probably one the best competitors of Cersei, Margaery from the House Tyrell is the perfect representation of shrewd manipulation. With her grandmother, Lady Olenna, backing her up, Margaery is extremely patient and an impeccable schemer.
From Renly Baratheon to Tommen Baratheon, Margaery manipulates three possible heirs to the Iron Throne till she finally marries Tommen. However, thanks to Cersei, she eventually dies in the Sept of Baelor due to wildfire.
Like the House Tyrell’s sigil that has a gold rose with a background in a green field, Margaery too represents love for power but unlike Cersei by “showing” love. The green field stands for cultivation which likewise requires gradual patience. Quite like that, Margaery too stays patient and strong even till her death, while gradually “growing strong” like the Tyrell motto, in the entire series.
4. Lady Catelyn Stark
Lady Catelyn Stark is undoubtedly one of the most loved and most missed female characters, after her unexpected death in the Red Wedding. Being a Stark wife and a Tully daughter, Catelyn stands strong and powerful even when she receives the death of her husband Lord Eddard Stark. Driven by motherhood, like Cersei, Lady Catelyn wages war only for the sake of her children.
Belonging to House Tully by blood, Lady Catelyn aptly represents its words, “Family, duty, honour” even before she was married to Lord Eddard Stark. As per history, Catelyn was supposed to marry Lord Eddard’s brother Brandon Stark. But unfortunately, when the latter is executed by the Mad King, she is promised to Eddard, to which she spoke none. Thus, representing the importance of “family, duty and honour” above anything else.
An indeed lady of honour, Cat we do dearly miss you!
5. Lady Olenna Tyrell
Probably the sassiest ladies in Game of Thrones, Lady Olenna, starring Diana Rigg, perfectly justifies Cersei’s words,
“the famously tart-tongued Queen of Thorns.”
From her first appearance with her meeting with Sansa Stark till her painless poisonous death, Lady Olenna has attracted massive love from the audience. Representing frankness, candid, sarcasm and open nature, Lady Olenna makes her own special place distinct amidst the crowd. So much so, even her death scene was the most distinguished and kickass one, with Olenna confessing about murdering Joffrey with complete pride.
Of course, we loved her for that, right!
6. Arya Stark
And of course, how can we ever forget Arya! Starring Masie Williams, Arya Stark is probably one of my favourite characters and definitely one of the best kickass ladies in Game of Thrones. A daddy’s girl and a tomboy daughter of the honourable Lord Eddard Stark, Arya breaks away from the conventional concepts that make a lady.
Since Season 1 itself, we see Arya wanting to be an independent fighter. Even when she gets her own direwolf, she names it Nymeria of Dorne, the Rhoynish warrior queen. Like Sansa too, she learns surviving but by learning to kill her enemies. From witnessing her beloved father’s beheading till executing (thankfully) Petyr Baelish, Arya too endured a series of misfortunes.
Her episode in Bravos further illustrates her unbent character and like her family’s sigil a wolf in the shape of an armour, she stands strong and tough even with the cruellest people around. All in all, Arya is the perfect representation of female strength and independence amidst male-dominated kingdoms.
7. Yara Greyjoy
Asha Greyjoy in books, Gemma Whelan stars as Yara Greyjoy yet another female martial after Arya Stark. All throughout the series, Yara has been a loyal Greyjoy and a dedicated daughter of Balon Greyjoy. And of course, an extremely loving and a protective sister of Theon. She has not only faithful and loyal men under her command but has unmatchable practical fighting skills and confidence unlike her brother Theon.
When Euron Greyjoy takes over, Yara instead of succumbing, allies with Daenerys, thus becoming stronger; quite similar to the Greyjoy phrase, “What is dead may never, but rise harder and stronger.” However been captured and presented before Cersei by Euron Greyjoy, it is yet to be seen how far she can go.
8. Brienne of Tarth
Starring Gwendoline Christie, Lady Brienne of Tarth is the third female martial on the list and probably the only lady knight in the entire series. Having taken an oath to Lady Catelyn, Brienne leaves no stone unturned to remain true to her words, to protect the Stark daughters.
Physically powerful, loyal, noble and extremely skilled. Brienne’s contrast to Jaime is a powerful one. Until his comeback to King’s Landing, Jaime just had the title of a knight without any honour, unlike Brienne. From her first appearance with Renly Baratheon, till she visits King’s Landing in the final season, Brienne embodies honour and valour.
9. Sansa Stark
From an innocent and foolish romantic teenage girl to the Lady of Winterfell, Sansa Stark is indeed one the bravest and strongest ladies in Game of Thrones. “A slow learner” she calls herself, Sansa perfectly represents the power of adaptability that can help you survive in the harshest situations.
From being surrounded by countless selfish liars in King’s Landing to finally being back in Winterfell, Sansa Stark has endured a lot, only to make her stronger and cleverer. Of course, to her sister Arya Stark, Sansa is ladylike and naive which she indeed is. Yet, that didn’t stop her from learning how to manipulate and turn wiser.
The late love of Jon Snow or Aegon Targaryen, Ygritte is nothing more than a wildling. Soon after her meeting with Jon Snow, she falls for him; love that became her passion. Unlike the many other ladies in Game of Thrones, Ygritte doesn’t have any love for “ladylike” things. However, that doesn’t stop her from being a good archer and of course, a passionate lover.
In spite of knowing Jon Snow’s real intention behind joining the free folk, Ygritte almost spares his life. Representing wild love in spite of being a free fierce lady, Jon Snow indeed missed her a lot till his meeting with Dany in Season 7.
11. Lyanna Mormont
Okay, I know she’s is a kid! But, whoa, she’s actually got more guts than even some of the leading men of the show. From her very first introduction in the Bear Island till her declaration to call Jon, the “King in the North”, this 10 yr girl defines valour and strength, to protect her people at any cost. Quite like the bear in the Mormont sigil. Way to go Lyanna!
Each of these ladies in Game of Thrones has been sketched impeccably to deliver a kind of their own. Of course, we have more strong female characters like Ellaria Sand, Missandei and Melisandre. However, I personally feel the abovementioned names deserve more salutes than the others.
Tell us below which one is your favourite and why. Also, if you like this post, don’t forget to share with a GOT fan. Till then, Valar Morghulis!
